The choice of metal is a personal one and we will honour your decision.

5 things to consider when choosing a metal for your engagement ring.

“The choice of metal is a personal one and we will honour your decision.”

Back in the day, you had the choice between classic metals, yellow gold or white gold, but today there are many more possibilities. We recommend some over others so this article will take you through what metals we find are best to work with, in your custom engagement ring or wedding band.

1 Style

Before we get into the properties of different metals, the first thing you may want to consider is the person who will be wearing the rings. What’s their style? Does she (or he) wear more yellow gold or rose gold with warmer tones? Or do they prefer silver jewellery with cooler hues? Do they mix their metals?

2 Skintone

Next, you may want to consider skin tone. With colour considerations, you don’t have too many choices when it comes to precious metals so we recommend choosing a metal based on their complexion that will pop on the skin.

  • Yellow Gold
  • Pink Gold, like Rose Gold
  • White metals, like White Gold or Platinum

3 Feel

Then consider the feel of the material. Certain metals feel more luxurious to wear, some are heavier or lighter in weight. Remember a ring is something very tactile. You’ll be wearing a wedding band or engagement daily and we can bet you’ll be twisting it around when you’re nervous or deep in thought…how would you like that to feel?

4 Durability

Something else to think about is wear and tear. Some metals are softer than others, allowing some adjustment to your individual finger. Do you work in a hands-on profession where the ring be subject to bumping and scraping? Or are you in an office job where durability isn’t really a factor for you?

5 Cost

Of course, you need to consider the cost of the metal you chose for your ring. Some metals are more expensive than others. Platinum is an expensive metal, more than gold, but it feels heavier but it’s harder and more difficult to maintain over time. Precious metals are called ‘precious,’ for good reason. They come from the Earth, they are sentimental and valuable. We believe this is the main reason precious metals are used in objects as sentimental as wedding bands and engagement rings.

What we do at Leonardo Fernandez Jewellery is present options to each client so you can make the best-informed decision for your jewellery piece. Where we can truly help you get the perfect metal is our ability to customise for you. We create our own alloys in house and can custom design a metal to meet your needs.

Our metal alloys are a little bit like the story of Goldilocks, you want not too much, not too little, but just enough of a blend to allow for the ring to be malleable enough to move with you and make a subtle adjustment to your finger.

“In the end, it’s about the individual and how they feel - are you confident enough to wear your ring and not the other way around?”
